clears up with Orinoco
Subtitle: not Wimbledon common!

Proxim is to buy the ORiNOCO brand from Agere
Systems for $65m in cash. Following the acquisition, Proxim will have
market leadership in the 802.11 sector. Proxim already have a strong
wireless technology brand particularly in the enterprise 802.11b and
wide-area wireless sectors.
Proxim's Harmony and Symphony range cover a complete range of wireless
standards including; 802.11a, 802.11b and OpenAIR suitable
small, medium and enterprise networks.
Schools and universities are particularly well
served by the centrally managed Harmony technology which supports
both the 11mbps WiFi standard and the the emerging fast 802.11a
54mbps wireless standard. Comprehensive security facilities are
provided by 128-bit WEP, MAC address control and VPN security controls
as well as compatibility with third party products such as Nomadix
and BlueSocket.
Support for new standards including 802.11x and 802.11g will be
made available during the latter half of 2002 for the whole product
range with easy deployment through the Harmony management system.
Their acquisition of the Orinoco brand will strengthen both brands,
making products available up to 6 months earlier.

unleashes Wi-Fi
Subtitle: Public wireless access set
to go from July 31st.

The UK Government today announced the deregulation
of the 2.4GHz band with an amendment to the Wireless Telegraphy
Act of 1949.
Stephen Timms, Government e-Commerce Minister, has opened the floodgates
for companies to use the 2.4GHz band commercially along side private
users.

up
Subtitle: BT hikes low internet costs

BT today raised the cost of their SurfTime
package supplied to millions of UK internet users to £7 off-peak
or £25 for Anytime access.
With the recent decreases in broadband prices, many people will
